A Dachshund’s Personality

A Dachshund’s Personality

Dachshunds are the best dogs in the world, but before you decide to take one home you need to know a few things.

Are dachshunds good family dogs?
Dachshunds are most suitable for families with older kids. When dachshunds are teased, hurt or jealous they tend to snap at people/dogs. Most dachshunds however will only bite someone when they are absolutely terrified, simply because this is natural dog behaviour.

Are dachshunds nice to other pets?
Dachshunds are very social. In general they get along pretty well with other dogs or pets. Because dachshunds get bored very easily they will love to have a furry friend to play with all day long.
You need to be careful when you own smaller pets such as rabbits, because there is a chance your dachshund will not understand that this is a housemate and not a prey.

Are dachshunds easy to train?
Yes, dachshunds are very easy to train as long as you act like the leader of the pack. They are clever, studious and love a good challenge. Make sure your dachshund does not get bored during a training session by teaching him challenging new tricks and/or schedule play-breaks.

Do dachshunds need a lot of exercise?
No, they do not need a lot of exercise. Just like most other dogs, taking them outside for a 10-20 minute walk 2-4 times a day is enough. Dachshunds do however really love to run, so if you get the chance take them to an off leash-safe environment as much as you can.

Do dachshunds bark a lot?
Yes, dachshunds do have the tendency to bark, but they do not bark a lot. They will bark when they feel ignored or when they want to alert you. Do not reward your dachshund when he barks to alert you but also do not ignore him. Make clear to him that you know he has tried to alert you and stay calm. This way your dachshund feels like he did his job and he will stop barking.

Is it easy to potty train a dachshund?
It can be difficult to potty train your dachshund. Some people even claim that dachshunds are in the top 20 of most difficult dogs to potty train. You do not need to worry about this too much though, because with the proper training a lot can be achieved.

What typical medical issues do dachshunds have?
Dachshunds are predisposed to back problems. Always make sure you lift your dachshund the right way, and try to avoid him walking up or down the stairs. More common problems are problems with their elbows, knees, fur and eyes.

What are typical dachshund characteristics?
Dachshunds are sporty, clever, easy to train, active, playful, affectionate, cuddly, stubborn, funny and they can be very naughty (which is hilarious most of the time)! They have big personalities and love attention. When they are ignored they will seek attention by barking, whining or doing something really naughty like chewing up shoes or jumping on tables.

What other things do I need to pay attention to?
Dachshunds are good not great listeners. When they are off leash, you need to realize that they might not listen to you when you tell them to come back. Never unleash your dachshund in an environment with a lot of traffic, deep water or other kind of dangerous places.
Never leave your dachshund alone outside of your house. Even in your garden your dachshund can get into a lot of trouble. From eating stones to chocking on rotten apples, your dachshund can seriously harm himself because of the fact that they are just very adventurous and nosy dogs.

Will other people like my dachshund?
Of course they will. How could you not like a sausage-shaped dog?

How could you not love a breed this beautiful?
